Year 7 have been working hard to understand and apply a 2000 year old theorem in their maths lessons. Before they were introduced to Pythagoras’ Theorem the learners practised one of their key skills: rounding to an appropriate degree of accuracy. With the use of Perigal’s Puzzle the learners were able to gain a conceptual understanding of how Pythagoras’ Theorem works. The learners are now attempting to solve worded problems which requires the use of Pythagoras’s Theorem in real life contexts. So far, they have worked in their table teams to solve problems and show off their solutions in a ‘gallery’ so that other teams can appreciate and learn from their solutions. Some learners will even have the opportunity to investigate how Pythagoras’ Theorem can be applied to three-dimensional objects.
In Spanish year 7 learners have been introduced to Spanish gastronomy, with a focus on communication and writing instructive texts, cooking and recording recipes. Learners have been researching different sorts of recipes in order to create a video while cooking and explaining the process in Spanish. Year 7 learners are beginning with the basic skills and rules in volleyball. They are learning how to dig, set and serve and are practising moving around the court to receive a serve. They are also working together to try and build an attack. This involves communicating with their team mates. Having a strong foundation in which to build will help them to develop in the challenging sport of volleyball.
Year 7 visited Escape60 for a highly unique and exciting entry point into their new unit on Resolution. Learners worked in groups and completed two different adventures where they had to react to different situations, test different skills, work together and solve problems in order to progress through the challenge. It was a thrilling, different and incredibly engaging activity in which our learners were able to deeply reflect on their new big idea. They even got to dress up!
Ten of our Middle Years learners took part in the NISC Model United Nations Conference 2017. The conference is modelled on the workings of the United Nations, and our learners were given the challenge of acting as delegates for different nations. They participated in the challenging tasks of lobbying, debating and writing resolutions, and they tried to negotiate their way towards outcomes that their countries would be positive about. We are very proud of our learners for taking part, and for all of their hard work before, and during, the conference.
In Year 7 this week we have been researching a range of philosophers who made theories about our solar system. Learners began by reflecting on what they already knew about our solar system and then explored whether each theory is accepted or not today. They then created timelines to show how the work of past philosophers has changed our understanding of the solar system.
In this unit on COLLABORATION, the learners have begun to investigate the Suffragette movement and how women around Britain had to work together to affect change for the better. They have started to develop their historical understanding of who the suffragettes were and how the methods they used to get the vote for women changed over time, by writing Point Evidence Explain paragraph for the first time. They developed their history skills by using historic sources to create a chronological timeline of events.
On Wednesday, we had our Middle Years Celebration of Learning. Families and learning facilitators joined us to watch wonderful presentations and performances which demonstrated learning that has been done in music, drama, science and PE. Thank you to those of you who joined us, and well done to all of our hardworking learners!
Year 7 teams are working in collaboration to create their very own radio broadcasts. The final broadcasts will include news reports, adverts, radio dramas and some music. By creating these, the learners are practising their skills of writing appropriately for different genres and expressing themselves with clarity.
