During our first science unit, Year 7s have been learning about living organisms; where they live, how to categorise them and then how to represent populations of living organisms in scientific diagrams. We are focusing on how and why each living organism is especially adapted for survival. Learners will be working towards presenting their own research on the adaptations of a chosen animal and using their expanding knowledge of scientific keywords to explain how the animals survive in their respective habitats.
Learners have been considering what adaptability means when applied to works of art, and how artists are adaptable. Firstly, learners had to work with limited resources to create interesting sculptures. Learners then created a sculpture in pairs and will continue to watch their sculpture adapt and change in the environment over time.
In Maths this week, Y7 were practising their measuring and estimating skills by taking part in the Metric Olympics. The had to compete in events such as paper plate discus, right hand marble grab and left hand sponge squeeze. They will then look at the difference (error) between their estimates and the actual measurement. One learner reflected on his estimates: "I was pretty accurate when measuring volume and length, but my weighing was way off."
Years 7, 8 and 9 are now using Edmodo which is an educational website that takes the ideas of a social network and refines them and makes it appropriate for a classroom. Using Edmodo, students and teachers can reach out to one another and connect by sharing ideas, problems, and helpful tips. Eventually we will be inviting parents to take part in this online learning environment.
Years 7 and 9 are creating eSafety licences for the Year 5s and 6s to use. In this fascinating project the learners are considering what is suitable to include on the licence i.e. not including personal information. They have the freedom to choose which software to use to complete this project and they are working collaboratively, reinforcing their cooperation and communication skills. In Language Arts, Year 7 have been studying adaptability as a theme of literature. They have been reading ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ and thinking about the meaning and importance of plot and theme. They are working towards writing their own short stories which have adaptability as a theme.
The pictures below show Year 7 making freeze frames of some of the most important parts of the novel, comparing how they would react to the way the main character reacts. |
