On Tuesday, our learners took part in our first social of the year. It was an Amazing Race in which the learners had to complete a series of challenges in the shortest time frame possible. The challenges included lego activities, dance routines and origami making. Our learners had lots of fun and enjoyed pizza in the hall once the race was over. Thank you to Student Voice for organising this event!
Last Friday, our Year 7 learners were so excited to meet their Year 9 mentors. We all came together in the hall and played some ice breaker games, and got to know each other a bit better. Throughout the year, the Year 9 mentors will be an extra support for their mentees, and will be there to guide them through their first year of Middle Years at iCAN.
The Year 7 learners have been reading an engaging text called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. They have been learning about quotations, and getting to know the main character of the novel, who thinks differently to most people. We will continue to explore the theme of adaptability through our reading, and by writing stories with adaptable main characters.
So far this Learning Block the Year 7s have been consolidating their number skills. They have shown off their division skills and also learned how to divide using the chunking and factor method. This week they have been working hard at ratio and proportion which included them completing a card sort which matches images to proportions and answering check point questions which demonstrates their progress.
We have been investigating how we adapt to weather and climate. With the recent hurricane in Texas we developed new knowledge by researching how hurricanes form, building on our previous learning about how rain forms and the different air masses that we find around the world. The learners then researched how the people in Texas were affected by the recent hurricane and how they had to adapt during the extreme weather conditions. We also looked at what they could do in the future to limit the impacts of a hurricane.
In this unit on Leadership, learners have defined what makes a good leader and are exploring aspects of effective leadership, such as communication skills and decision making. Through basketball they are developing their understanding of successful leadership by working with others and assuming different leadership roles within the team. After each lesson the learners are completing a leadership review and are nominating learners that have demonstrated leadership qualities together with an appropriate example of how this quality allowed the leader to influence others. As the learners begin to demonstrate each of these qualities, they will be able to work their way up the ‘leadership ladder’, which will be employed throughout the unit.
