Learning Journey
We have been learning as geographers this week. We started our week learning lots of new knowledge about the monarch butterfly! It is an amazing insect which lives in North America. We discovered that this butterfly cannot survive the cold and harsh winters in North America! Do you know what the monarch butterfly does to survive? It migrates down south to Mexico! The winters in Mexico are not as cold so the Monarch butterfly can survive!
The monarch butterfly is very unique! It flies to the same place in Mexico where its ancestors would have flown! Sometimes they even fly to the very same tree!
Once they have made the journey to Mexico, they rest there for the winter. Amazingly they fly all the way back to North America in the Spring to lay their eggs on a milk weed leaf! That is a lot of travelling for such a small insect!
We learned that in order to help the monarch butterflies we must not chop down the trees in Mexico and we should plant lots of milk weed plants in Canada .
Later in the week we practiced our skill of finding countries on maps of a variety of scales. We found Canada and Mexico on a globe, on a huge map and on a small map! We then cut out lots of little monarch butterflies and stuck them on our map to show the migration route the monarch butterfly takes!
We were very lucky to also learn about the festival of Pchum Ben. Our fantastic LSAs planned lots of wonderful activities for us to experience a Pchum Ben festival. We learned about why Pchum Ben is celebrated, we tasted sticky rice cake, made our own sticky rice balls and practiced folding a lotus flower. Lots of the new knowledge we learned helped us to understand the importance of flowers used in festivals.
We reflected on our learning by being thinkers! We thought about others festivals we know and take part in, how they are similar and how they are different to Pchum Ben, and if they also use flowers as part of their festival celebrations?
MathsIn Year 1 this week we have been learning to double numbers to 10 and above. We played lots of games to practise this skill and finished by making our own doubling games for our friends to match numbers to their doubles. We learned to tell the difference between odd and even numbers and used this to help us to count in twos. In Year 2 we have been using our understanding of number bonds to help us solve tricky addition sums! We have been very resilient and have been using our prior knowledge to help us complete our maths learning! | LiteracyIn literacy this week Year 1 and Year 2 have been learning about poetry! In Year 1 we have been busy learning new Knowledge! We have been learning about the different styles of poems and working really hard to identify whether a poem is an acrostic poem, a In Year 2 we have been learning about rhyme! We read lots of poems with rhyming words and identified the words which rhyme. We also played lots of rhyming games to help us understand what a rhyming word is. This was sometimes really tricky but we were very resilient learners! We finished our week learning about beat and rhythm. We used our knowledge of poems to help us understand why poems often have a rhythm. We used musical instruments to help us establish the beat of some of our favourite poems and nursery rhymes! |
