Year 9 learners are coding in Python. In our first lesson we setup our computers in order to be able to run Python, this included downloading a text editor, learning how to use Powershell and running Python. We then started to code learning about syntax, testing and debugging.
On Tuesday, Year 9 took part in an Entry Point which engaged them with their new Learning Theme: Interpretation. They took part in a variety of activities including sensory games, Kanbuki drama and looking at optical illusions. The highlight of the day was a trip to Dine in the Dark for lunch. The learners were served food in pitch black darkness and they had to guess what they had eaten afterwards.
Year 9 have been working in teams this week to create videos of their responses to questions about forces in space, ethical issues astronauts face, how we could meet Human needs for life on Mars, and how discoveries and theories have influenced our understanding of space. Learners have investigated plans by SpaceX to colonise Mars, facts about planet Mars and discovered their weight forces on planets of our solar system by calculating mass x gravity. I’m looking forward to watching their out of this world videos!
The Year 9 learners have continued to develop their historical skills, using a variety of primary and secondary sources to investigate why people voted for Hitler. They have been challenged to think about the justice of a society that were allowed to democratically elect Adolf Hitler, this enabled the learners to develop their knowledge of post-World War 1 Germany, learning about the events leading up to Hitler’s rise, making links between the cause and effects that led Hitler’s rise to power. The learners have then applied this knowledge to write an essay to show what reason they think is the most important for why people voted for Hitler.
Learners explored graffiti and focused on learning how to make and cut stencils. Learners looked at artists such as “Blek le Rat” and “Banksy” and how they create their work. Learners chose an image, altered it in Photoshop while creating multiple layers, then cut and sprayed their own original work.
The Year 9 learners have been reading 'An Inspector Calls' and making connections between the different events and characters in the play. They have been exploring the role of the Inspector and how he is used to propagate J.B. Priestley's socialist message.
Having just refreshed and practised their decimal skills, Year 9 have now moved on to probability. From their Knowledge Harvest the Year 9s spoke about the language of probability, how it is measured and why Sunderland winning the Premier League is highly unlikely but not impossible. The Year 9s will continue their journey through probability and investigate the outcomes of certain games and why with the odds are stacked against them.
