In drama this Learning Block, the Year 9s have been revisiting their drama skills and considering how they can use these to explore characterisation. They have been learning about what status means, and how drama can be used to represent this. In addition they have been working on off text role plays based around the characters of George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men.

On Tuesday, our learners took part in our first social of the year. It was an Amazing Race in which the learners had to complete a series of challenges in the shortest time frame possible. The challenges included lego activities, dance routines and origami making. Our learners had lots of fun and enjoyed pizza in the hall once the race was over. Thank you to Student Voice for organising this event!
Last Friday, our Year 9 learners took on the great responsibility of becoming mentors to Year 7s. They all came together in the hall and played some ice breaker games, and got to know each other a bit better. Throughout the year, the Year 9 mentors will be an extra support for their mentees, and will be there to guide them through their first year of Middle Years at iCAN.
Year 9 have begun to read the classic novella, 'Of Mice and Men.' They have spent some time exploring the context of the novel, including the idea of the American Dream. The learners are now starting to read the text, and they will be exploring George's leadership of Lennie.
The Year 9s have been working hard these past weeks at consolidating and improving their angle skills as they solve missing angle problems in parallel lines and polygons. They are currently working on circles where they have had the chance to demonstrate their skills of solving area and circumference problems. Some groups were even able to investigate circle theorems and present their findings to the class.
The learners in Year 9 have been practising their skills in historical source work, while investigating what Germany was like in the 1920s. This will provide the learners with new knowledge to apply when they start to investigate and write an essay about how Adolf Hitler used his personality to influence the German people to vote for the Nazi Party in 1933.
Year 8 are building on the foundations they made last year in basketball. They are developing their passing and receiving skills together with their ability to pivot and dribble. Their shooting is also an area in which they will try to improve, especially the lay-up.
