The Year 9 learners have been busy creating works of art and designing up-cycled original products from old resources. Once the fun had finished disassembling items, the real business began getting their products ready for the Environmental Awareness Exhibition. This will be held during the Exit week, each product on display will have a message for the audience... To find out more make sure that you come along to the exhibition!
Learners in Year 9 have been exploring environmental issues that face our world. Learners created audio news reports on some of these issues and have also done research on these issues. Analysing graphical data and science articles has given learners the opportunity to consider what reliable data looks like and what leans more toward opinion. Learners were trained how to use a microscope and spent several lessons analysing various materials and insects under a microscope. A highlight was the leaf stoma that learners were able to find and analyse. Learners wrapped up the unit by practicing the inquiry process – conducting a formal investigation to answer a question. Learners did this by building foil rockets and collecting data on the launches in order to answer a question they had about the rockets (such as “How does the length of the rocket affect the distance it travels?” or “Which shape of rocket fin allows the rocket to stay in the air the longest”). It has been an exciting start to the year and the learners’ engagement has fostered curiosity and discovery in science here at iCAN.
Year 9 have been building up their knowledge on what phishing is and how to create a stronger password. As they have been learning about phishing they are now able to spot emails sent by people who are trying to capture their personal information. They have also been planning a lesson on Google Suite. Each learner has chosen a different app from Google Suite and they will teach it to the class after Exit Points.
