Year 9 learned about how fabric is produced, and they visited First Gawon Apparel garment factory. They saw the warehouse, where rolls of fabric are cut to size, and they saw the workhouse where the sewing is done. They asked lots of good questions, such as why it is mainly women working in the factory. When the learners got back to school they used scraps of material that we got from the factory to make new things (fabric art, bracelets, hairbands). They were able to guess the concept Big Idea during reflection time, and they could link the Big Idea to the their contemporary experiences, as they are coming to the end of their time and iCAN, and preparing to move forward.
During this learning block all learners have participated in their very first Science Fair at iCAN.
They learned about the meaning of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and how subjects such as art, design technology and maths could link to their projects. Learners worked in table teams to brainstorm ideas they wanted to investigate and were encouraged to link their project to a real life issue or aspect of STEM. It was a wonderful opportunity for learners to develop their science skills whilst developing their knowledge of a specific STEM issue or question. After 5 weeks of hard work, successes, failures, russian market adventures and glue gun dramas the MY learners were proud to host their first Science Fair. We are grateful to the many visitors who took the time to speak to learners and see the incredible work that they did, both in carrying out their investigations and in displaying their planning and results. |
