Year 8 have taken on the exciting challenge of reading William Golding's Lord of the Flies. So far, we have used a variety of different strategies to read and understand the opening chapters, including lots of partner reading. The learners are currently using their planning skills to prepare an essay on who they think will be the island's leader. They have been working so hard to find and cite evidence to support their inferences and to develop their explanations as much as possible.
In the photos you will see a 'Diamond 9'. The Year 8s used this to rank leadership skills they think are key. The ones at the top are most important, the ones near the bottom are least important and the ones which are side by side are equally important... See what you think of their ideas! Do you agree?

Year 8 have spent the last 2 weeks creating the storyboard and the script of their stop motion project. This week we have moved on to the elaboration of the frames they´ll be using on the stop motion production stage on Learning Block 6.
Meanwhile, learners continue with Duolingo assignments in their spare time, practising with vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures.

The Year 8’s have been working on tectonic hazards this learning block, during this week year 8 learners were asked to assume roles in a disaster management simulation. They were making decisions on what should be done during the 1995-1998 eruption of Soufriere hills, Montserrat and map the effects. This was a scored exercise which meant a small competition between each group in the class to see who would make the best decisions. The winning groups by class were: 8L Ho Ka, Aruha, Chamrong and Chayse while in 8P the winning team was Keita, Glorija and Ami. They all learnt the respect we need to have for natural disasters and the hard work that goes into saving people’s lives when these disasters take place. This learning allowed them to build on their learning from earlier in the year when they looked at disaster mapping using GIS systems like those used by WHO and other agencies operating in emergencies.

Learners this week have been applying their skills in angle measuring and map scalea. We positioned their questions around the scenario of them being allied bomber navigators during World War 2 going on sorties over Europe. This has been a great way to connect with their learning previous learning in humanities.
