Year 8 are currently exploring theme of Belief through their Language Arts Topic, ‘Macbeth.’ In Drama they have been considering different interpretations of the witches. They watched different versions, and created freeze frames based around traditional and modern representations of the witches. They chose one version and bought it to life in a role play, which was performed to the class. Next steps will be to learn some of the original Shakespearean language, and consider elements such as setting the scene characterisation and plot development.

Year 7 are currently exploring the theme of Adaptability through basketball and water polo. They are reflecting on their ability to change, alter or cope with new environments or circumstances within game situations. Within basketball they are focusing on improving the accuracy of their chest pass together with their dribbling skills. The learners are also aiming to improve their shooting skills, especially the lay-up.
In maths, Year 8 have been consolidating and extending their knowledge, skills and understanding of fractions, ratio and proportion. These will all be important when it comes to considering probability and whether they suffer or gain as a result of their belief about their chances of winning.
The learners were given the task of researching an ideology that shaped our world post World War 1. Their focus was on the skills of asking appropriate historical questions to find information to teach the rest of the class about their ideology. The learners looked at how their ideology had affected the world and at how people had gained or suffered as a result of these ideologies.
Year 8 have been reading and learning about the powerful, tragic play of 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare. They have been using a variety of dramatic approaches to understand the meaning of the Shakespearean language, and to explore the characters. The learners are also analysing key quotations which they will explore in an essay at the end of the unit.
Year 8 gained an understanding of their big idea of Belief by taking part in their first Entry Point of the year. They visited numerous religious sites around Phnom Penh, and learned about different religions in Cambodia.
Year 8 had a fantastic entry point for their Resilience unit where they created a mass domino effect. They were split into their new table teams, were given a box of objects and were responsible for creating one section of the domino run. They had to do many trial runs and showed tremendous enthusiasm and persistence when things didn’t go according to plan. Learners thoroughly enjoyed their entry point and were able to guess what the big idea and theme was from their experience.
During this learning block all learners have participated in their very first Science Fair at iCAN.
They learned about the meaning of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and how subjects such as art, design technology and maths could link to their projects. Learners worked in table teams to brainstorm ideas they wanted to investigate and were encouraged to link their project to a real life issue or aspect of STEM. It was a wonderful opportunity for learners to develop their science skills whilst developing their knowledge of a specific STEM issue or question. After 5 weeks of hard work, successes, failures, russian market adventures and glue gun dramas the MY learners were proud to host their first Science Fair. We are grateful to the many visitors who took the time to speak to learners and see the incredible work that they did, both in carrying out their investigations and in displaying their planning and results. The Year 8 Learners are finishing up on their self-portraits. They followed the grid drawing method and transferred their photo to a larger scale drawing. Now their focus is contour line drawings and using watercolours.
Year 8 have been great enquirers as they begin their exploration into the data handling cycle. The Knowledge Harvest saw the learners conduct an investigation where they had to test their hypotheses about the number of sweets there are in a packet. This required them to collect, represent and interpret primary data. The learners have recently demonstrated their understanding of bar charts by completing the chart busters’ treasure hunt which meant they had to interpret simple, comparative and compound bar charts. They also had to display their higher order thinking skills when asked to analyse a comparative bar chart showing tropical deforestation across the world. The learners had to write a PEE paragraph which explained why different regions had different deforestation rates by recalling their knowledge of emerging economies from humanities and also make a prediction as to what they think the deforestation rates will be like in the future.
