In Year 8 learners have chosen a Pixar or an animated short to voice over. They need to make sure they are using not only simple sentences, but also adding richer vocabulary and also longer sentences. Also, they need to include fixed phrases or idioms.

Year 8 learners have been looking at the role that punctuation plays in effective communication. They have had a particular focus on important comma rules. The Year 8s wrote and performed parodies of songs that they like, but they changed the lyrics to share the rules of commas.
Last week Year 8 celebrated Book Week. They decorated their form room door with art work relating to one of their favourite books Chinese Cinderella. Year 8 won the Middle Years competition for the best door! As well as that, they had opportunities to listen to stories by Mr Phill and they also created stories and dramatic scenes of their own.
In Year 8 the learners have been investigating war propaganda and how the message given by the government might be different to what is actually happening, and why this might be important. They are currently creating a piece of propaganda from World War 1. They are looking at how they communicate their point to the people living through the war. This has meant that they have had to look carefully at how a message can affect people, and what features they could add that would make their propaganda more effective in getting men to join the army, hate the enemy or get women to join the war effort
Our Year 7 and 8 learners had an incredible time on their residential trip to Koh Chang. They took many risks by embracing the challenges of the treetops course, the hike through the forest, the snorkelling adventure and by swimming in the waterfalls. They also learned more about themselves as they were given more independence and they made new friends. This was a memorable trip for all of us, and our learners have been reflecting on how much it helped them to develop their personal goals. A Koh Chang Poem by Suni, Chhiv, Sothy and Bisruti
A new pink dawn Greets thirty-nine sleepy travellers Barely ready for a long journey north. Takeaway lunch Is eaten reluctantly in a petrol parking lot. They arrive Surveying their new surroundings through Tired and disgruntled eyes. A new day rises. Looking around, taking in the view They gazed in awe at trees which stretched into the blue. Belts and buckles, keeping them safe Swinging on ropes and vines at their own pace. The long hike- What seems like days and nights Dragging into months. However, they discover a grand prize At the finish line. The waterfall plunges into the dark pool And we sigh in relief Ready to dive into the water. A new day comes and goes And before you know it They’re on the road Off to see the mangroves. Back at the beach Their friends scramble around Kings and Queens of their own little kingdoms (By the way, why didn’t I win the Sandcastle competition?) When the blue turns to shades of red and vermillion, The sky has its own way to tell us to go to dinner. Year 8 explored their Big Idea of Courage by watching and discussing the themes of the film Hidden Figures. They then created works of art which reflected how they see themselves.
After getting in the Impressionist artists’ way of thinking, Year 8 learners have been painting freestyle out in the elements. First they practised Monet style in portraits, now they are practicing impressionist landscapes like Leonind Afremov. This then leads on to Georges Suarat’s invention of Pointillism…
For this unit, Year 8 have been working hard at trying to understand the applications of Newton’s Laws of Motion. In addition, we have been looking at the physics behind skydiving and how terminal velocity plays a key role in parachute designs. The learners were then given the task of creating 3 parachutes each made of different materials which had to reach the floor in the slowest time possible. With this task they were consolidating the key scientific skills of recording and representing data and using their scientific knowledge to explain the results of the experiment.
Year 8 have been learning what personal information is and how to keep this safe when online. They are also creating an infographic for either their home or host country. This is a completely new unit so in order to build up their knowledge, skills and understanding they created a short infographic for our school.
On Tuesday, our learners took part in our first social of the year. It was an Amazing Race in which the learners had to complete a series of challenges in the shortest time frame possible. The challenges included lego activities, dance routines and origami making. Our learners had lots of fun and enjoyed pizza in the hall once the race was over. Thank you to Student Voice for organising this event!
