This week Year 9 planned and participated in a slave ship court case. They had been learning about how a slave’s identity was affected during each stage of enslavery. When learning about the Middle Passage, they focused on a specific real life slave ship, the Zong. In this case, the owners, captain and crew were taken to court over the murder of 132 slaves. The learners used various sources of information to understand the case and took on a character involved in the case. They had to emphasise with the character they had been given and prepare their evidence for the court case. We transformed the classroom into a court room and every witness had to make an oath. All learners delivered evidence filled speeches and were questioned and cross-examined by the wonderful defence solicitor Lehkena and firm prosecutor Andrew. A fantastic demonstration of their ability to analyse sources and understand the complex nature of this real life case. Great job Year 9!
