Learners in Year 9 have been exploring environmental issues that face our world. Learners created audio news reports on some of these issues and have also done research on these issues. Analysing graphical data and science articles has given learners the opportunity to consider what reliable data looks like and what leans more toward opinion. Learners were trained how to use a microscope and spent several lessons analysing various materials and insects under a microscope. A highlight was the leaf stoma that learners were able to find and analyse. Learners wrapped up the unit by practicing the inquiry process – conducting a formal investigation to answer a question. Learners did this by building foil rockets and collecting data on the launches in order to answer a question they had about the rockets (such as “How does the length of the rocket affect the distance it travels?” or “Which shape of rocket fin allows the rocket to stay in the air the longest”). It has been an exciting start to the year and the learners’ engagement has fostered curiosity and discovery in science here at iCAN.
