Science
In Year 8 we have been investigating forces. The learners have created their own definitions of what force is, describing examples of when forces acting on objects are balanced/unbalanced, contact or non contact and then explaining how they decided to categorise each type of force. They have used physical demonstrations to describe different types of forces and developed their ability to explain the effects of forces on each other. This week they were put in charge of planning and carrying out an investigation of the effects of friction on an object travelling along various surfaces. They chose 5 surfaces and an object of a fixed mass, then measured the distance it travelled when launched. They will be analysing their results next lesson to establish a link between types of surfaces and the effects of friction upon the movement of their objects.

Maths
Year 8 have been finishing off their consolidation of algebra with some challenging homework questions during week 1, and in week 2 started their new unit on geometry. They have been revisiting their knowledge of properties of shapes and using their classification skills to identify a range of 2D regular and irregular shapes. They demonstrated their understanding of what they have learnt by producing shape classification flowchart. On Friday they begin to look at angle facts and have been practicing their skills of finding missing angles in a range of shapes and lines.
