We started this topic with our Entry Point, thinking about our home/host/adopted countries and creating collages to express what they mean to us. This was followed by our Knowledge Harvest and Explaining the Theme where we thought more about locations of different cities and countries on a world map.
Take a look at our wonderful collages below! Can you spot the different countries that are represented on each collage?
What has been happening in Year 5?
Literacy In Literacy we have been reading the books 'When the Forest Meets the Sea' and 'Grandpa Chatterji'. We have developed our understanding of each text by using role play to bring the story to life. We have also been practicing our own narrative skills so that we can write our own versions of a story. In order to do this we have had to recall features of a narrative story so we know what to include in our own versions. To write our own narrative stories we have really focused on using reported and direct speech. Do you feel confident enough to explain the difference? | Maths Year 5 have been developing a range of maths skills this week! First we looked at consolidating our knowledge of different subtraction methods. We used mental as well as written strategies so that when we come to answer word problems we can use the strategy that is most suitable for us. What strategy would you use to answer this question? Why? To understand methods of subtraction it is useful to put them into real life contexts. Can you think of any real life situations where you have had to practice your subtraction skills? Year 5 have also been thinking about multiplication. There are a range of multiplications methods that can be used depending on the questions you are answering. Some methods include: column multiplication, expanded method, grid method, mental multiplication. What method would you use to solve the following? |
What has been happening in Year 6?
Literacy In Literacy we have continued to read Rabbit Proof Fence as well as watch the film adaptation. We have really got to know some of the main characters a bit better. We have taken a closer look at Molly's character and how she is portrayed both in the text version and the film. We even created some character profile sheets as records that would have been sent to Moore River Settlement; the camp that Molly, Grace and Daisy were sent to. We used our description skills to try and portray Molly as accurately as possible. It was really interesting to compare movie and text, this enhanced our understanding of the characters and how different people interpret the story. There is a lot of new vocabulary in Rabbit Proof Fence. Use the guide below to help you with your understanding of new words. | Maths In Maths we have finished our work on negative numbers. We put all of our skills into context by studying Football league tables and working out the Goal Differences between each team. Luckily we have Mr Tom the football expert to guide us! We then ended the topic with a giant game of negative numbers tug of war! As well as consolidating our knowledge and understanding of negative numbers, we also had a lot of fun! If you want to challenge yourself at home then use the questions below! |
