Learning Journey
We were set a mission to help find our Learning Support Assistants who were stranded in the middle of the Antarctic. In order to find them our learners were challenged to follow several riddles and then navigate through an obstacle course blindfolded.
We finished our sleepover by watching the documentary film 'Antarctica: A Year on Ice'. This film depicted a fascinating view of one of the harshest climates on Earth and we certainly learnt lots in preparation for our new unit.
What else has been happening in Milepost 3?
In Year 6 this week our learners have been continuing to read the novel 'Demon Dentist' by David Walliams. We have also been practising a range of writing skills including the accurate use of speech marks and similes and metaphors for description.
We started the week developing our drama skills with Ms Philippa. We were able to secure our understanding of key characters in the story including MIss Root and Alfie. We finished the week by writing a description of a gruesome scene in which a dentist's chair lies!
What simile would you use to describe the image above?
We continued the week and wrote our own explanation text about a contraption that we devised ourselves.
It can be useful to think of the structure of an explanation text as a burger!
In Year 6 this week we have moved onto thinking about percentages and their relationship to fractions. We have also been finding percentages of an amount and practised this skill on a percentages board game!
In order to find percentages of amounts we need a secure knowledge of multiplication and division facts. We also applied this skill by solving word problems. Finding percentages of amounts is something we can use in every day life. For instance when we go shopping there might be a 25% discount. This skill helps us to be able to find out new prices.
In Year 5 this week we have been calculating the area and perimeter of different shapes. The area of a shape is the space inside the shape and the perimeter is the distance around the shape. To calculate perimeter and area of a square or rectangle we can use different formulas.
Area=LengthxWidth
Perimeter =Length+Length+Width+Width
