We found about about the past through secondary sources. We wondered what a secondary source was. We discovered that a first source was finding out information through speaking to someone from the past first hand. Since all the Ancient Greek are no longer with us, we had to rely on secondary sources - people who have worked hard to study the Ancient Greeks and have shared their information. We focused our research on how the Ancient Greeks told their stories. Through our own research we discovered that the Ancient Greeks painted scenes from their stories onto clay pots. This sparked our enquiry skills and we wanted to research Ancient Greek pots! Through researching by ourselves or with a partner, using the internet and information sheets we found out so much new knowledge!
Did you know that only men were allowed to make the clay pots?
Did you know that the Ancient Greeks didn’t have paint in a bottle like we have at school?! They had to make their own paint using natural materials! They used something called 'slip'
If you are not sure what slip is ask us! We can tell you lots of knowledge about Ancient Greek pottery!
We finished our week by using the knowledge we had learned through enquiry to create our own clay pot with a scene painted on from Theseus and the Minotaur. We debated whether the girls were allowed to make the pots and discussed how things have slowly changed and women are now allowed to do many of the jobs which were once reserved only for men.
You can make your own printable pot using this website!
In Year 1 we have been busy finding fractions of shapes. First we folded shapes into halves and quarters. Then we shaded shapes to show one half or 1 quarter. Some of us even found 2 or 3 quarters!
In Year 2 we have been busy learning about doubles of numbers and halves of numbers! We halved numbers up to 20 though sharing and we doubled numbers to 20 in our mentally and through partitioning.
Here are the steps...
Partition 14 into 10 and 4
Double 10 is 20
Double 4 is 8
20 add 8 is 28
So double 14 is 28
We finished our week by learning to mentally add two digits numbers together. We used our knowledge of adding 10 to a two digit number to help us perform this tricky skill!
Those of us in Year 1 have been learning how to write instructions. We read different sets of instructions and looked at how they use 'bossy verbs' to tell the reader what to do. After making chocolate chip cookies as a whole class, we wrote a recipe by writing a list of ingredients and writing each step using an imperative verb.
In Year 2 we have continued learning about traditional stories from other cultures. This week we learned about the story Baba Yaga and the Black Geese. We compared this story to Hansel and Gretel, discussed the similarities and differences and which story we preferred and why. We continued our learning by retelling the story using our voices and actions. This helped us later in the week when we practiced the skill of planning! Next week we are going to write our own version of Baba Yaga so we were very busy towards the end of the week planning our writing using a story map!
